Orvis started the Orvis sporting good company in 1856 in Manchester, Vermont, 27 years before publication of this book. A. Nelson Cheney, a distant relative of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was a prominent flyfisher and writer and served as New York State Fish Culturist from 1895 until his death in 1901.
