Missing last blank page, front hinge cracked Volume 1; lower quadrant rear free endpaper torn away Volume 2; last free endpaper torn out Volume 3; wear to cloth at heel of spine Volume 5. An attractive set, individual volumes are in good to very good condition overall.  Item #900217

The first 42 issues of the periodical (July 1868, Vol. 1, #1 - December 1871, Vol. 7, #6), in 7 bound volumes, 6 months per volume. San Francisco publisher and bookseller Anton Roman's frontier periodical, conceived as the Western equivalent of the Atlantic Monthly. Bret Harte served as its first editor (through Feb. 1871). Harte's "Luck of Roaring Camp" (Vol. 1, #2, 1868), Outcasts of Poker Flat (Vol. 2, #1, 1869), and "Idyl of Red Gulch" (Vol. 3, #6, 1869) appeared first here, as did his most successful work of the day "Plain Language from Truth James," a narrative poem later republished as "The Heathen Chinee" (Vol. 3, #3, 1869). Travelogues from Mark Twain (A Californian Abroad) which appeared in the first four issues: “By Rail Through France”, “A Few Parisian Sights”, “Three Italian Cities”, and “A Medieval Romance”; Other notable contributions include Jesse Applegate’s "A Day with the Cow Column in 1843" (Vol. 1, #2, 1868); Thomas Condon's "Geological Notes from Oregon" (Vol. 3, #4, 1869), "Rocks of the John Day Valley" (Vol. 6, #5, 1871), and "The Willamette Sound" (Vol. 7, #5, 1871); Joaquin Miller's "Scenes in Central England (Vol. 6, #5, May 1871) & "On and About the Avon (Vol. 7, #4, 1871); and Ambrose Bierce's "The Haunted Valley" (Vol. 7, #1, 1871).
