The Big Knockover

New York: Random House, 1966.
First Printing, Book Club Edition. Octavo, black cloth, xxi, 355pp, top-edge green. Item #900248

Edited and with an Introduction by Lillian Hellman. A collection of nine stories which have never appeared in hardcover before plus first publication of an unfinished novel, "Tulip." The stories mostly feature the Continental Op, a hard-boiled operative of the Contintuental Detective Agency, an organization modeled on the Pinkerton Agency for which Hammett once worked. Short, thick-bodied, mulishly stubborn, and indifferent to pain, Dashiell Hammett's Continetal Op was the prototype for generations of tough-guy detectives to come.
