Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) – Cagney stars as the street gangster who is hero to a gang of young punks; Pat O’Brien is the boyhood chum turned priest who tries to lure the kids away from the gangster’s influence; Humphrey Bogart plays a scheming lawyer. Cagney received the 1938 NY Film Critics Best Actor Award for his performance. His death row finale is legendary.
The Roaring Twenties (1939) – War veteran turned bootlegger James Cagney wrangles with Humphrey Bogart to maintain control of his gangland empire. When he meets a fatal end at the film’s finale, Panama Smith (Gladys George) says famously, “He used to be a big shot.”
White Heat (1949) – A fast-paced psychological thriller tracing the life of psychotic thug Cody Jarrett directed by Raoul Walsh and featuring Virginia Mayo and Edmund O’Brien.
