Set during the reign of William the Conqueror, 20 years after the Norman Conquest at the Battle of Hastings. Engaged in a draining conflict with the Danes, the king has sent royal tribunals throughout the kingdom to survey landholdings and levy taxes. Soldier Ralph Delchard and lawyer Gervase Bret are members of one such tribunal, sent in 1086 to visit the town of Bedwyn. The Normans and Saxons are antagonistic of one another and the village is enmeshed in intrigue. When a mangled body is found in the woods, Ralph and Gervase are drawn into the hunt for the killer.
