The fantastical art, bridging surrealism and abstract expressionism, of German painter and photographer Wolfgang Schulze (1913-51), known as Wols. 200 color images of the artist’s work, comprising 1/3 of his total oeuvre, are shown here. The majority of the work has been drawn from private collections and is rarely seen publicly. The paintings are accompanied by drawings and aquarelles which show the artist’s evolution. Includes photography, works on paper, and paintings, and essays by German and American scholars who put Wols’ achievement in an historical and artistic context.
