Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1946.
First American Edition. Hardcover. 5-7/16 x 8", beige cloth with green accents and red titles, green endpapers, 312pp. Item #900686

First American Edition of avant-garde author Anna Kavan's first fictional work under her new name. Kavan wrote 6 novels under the name of Helen Ferguson (1929-1937), but subsequently adopted both the name of a character who appeared in two of her previous novels - and an edgier style.

This collection of 21 stories, interlinked and largely autobiographical, follows the narrator on a descent into madness and commitment to an asylum. Her work is often compared to that of Franz Kafka.

Small stain bottom-edge of leaves and rear board, small spot of paste-down endpaper surface rubbed away, minor bump to front board near tail of spine, else a fine, bright, crisp copy in very good rubbed dust wrapper with a few tiny chips and edge tears (the longest is 7/8") and a scrape to front panel, in protective mylar.

Price: $350.00
