Platt visited Italy in 1892 to photograph surviving Renaissance and Baroque gardens. Images in this book are drawn principally from two articles published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine (1893). Platt's aesthetic, influenced by Reginald Blomfield's The Formal Garden in England (1892) and gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll illustrated in Country Life, helped to inspire a movement away from the American country house style typical of the 1880s and into the more stylized classical gardens of the 20th century encompassing terracing, formal stairs and water features, herbaceous borders and pergolas.

Very good.
