Course #7240.  Professor Robert Greenberg is Music Historian-in-Residence with San Francisco Performances and himself the composer of over 50 vocal and instrumental works. In this series of 24 45-minute lectures, Dr. Greenberg explores the string quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven not only as great works of art, but as a musical diary of the evolution of Beethoven’s compositional techniques and expressive priorities. This course examines the composition of Beethoven’s string quartets chronologically, which frequently differs from the published numbering of pieces. A chronological examination allows us to follow the intellectual and creative development of a composer who internalized the genre as it existed to his time and then pushed it far beyond its boundaries.
