The Criterion Collection, 2016.
First Printing. Blu-Ray Disc.

Kubrick's satirical black comedy embodies the anxieties and contradictions of the cold war era in American politics.  Peter Sellers plays three roles – hapless and impressionable President Merkin Muffley who is tasked with a decision on how to respond to a possible Soviet nuclear attack, Royal Air Force Captain Lionel Mandrake who tries timidly to prevent a nuclear response ordered by an unbalanced general (Sterling Hayden), and presidential adviser Dr. Strangelove with a Nazi past and a disturbing sense of humor. Blu-ray special edition features:

  • Restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • Alternate 5.1 surround soundtrack, presented in DTS-HD master audio
  • New interviews with Stanley Kubrick scholars Mick Broderick and Rodney Hill, archivist Richard Daniels, cinematographer Joe Dunton, camera operator Kelvin Pike, and David George, son of Peter George, on whose novel Red Alert the film is based
  • Excerpts from a 1966 audio interview with Kubrick, conducted by physicist and author Jeremy Bernstein
  • Four short documentaries about the making of the film, the sociopolitical climate of the period, the work of actor Peter Sellers, and the artistry of Kubrick
  • Interviews from 1963 with Sellers and actor George C. Scott
