An absurd, tragicomic epic about a bombardier, John Yossarian, stationed on a fictional World War II island. Yossarian is a lone, sane Everyman, determined to survive in a world where the greatest danger is not the "enemy" but his superiors and their bureaucratic abuse of the unwritten rule, Catch-22. When Heller was told that he had never written anything better than Catch-22, he is said to have replied, "Who has?"
