New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, 1977.
First American Edition. Hardcover.

A volume in the History of World Architecture series edited by Pier Luigi Nervi. A study of the 400-year history of gothic architecture in Europe. After a discussion of componential, structural, spatial, historical, and iconographical considerations, Professor Grodecki examines first the early development of the Gothic style in France in the 12th century, moves to the Classical Age with examination of its most magnificent examples - the cathedrals of Chartres, Reims, Bourges, and Amiens in France, and proceeds to examine its growth and variations in other countries. Outstanding buildings in England (Canterbury and Lincoln cathedrals and Westminster Abbey), Germany (abbey churches of the Rhineland and Cologne Cathedral), cathedrals in Vienna and Prague, as well as diverse structures secular and religious structures in Italy, Spain, and Portugal are all placed in their proper artistic contest in reference to the Gothic style.
