Images in the Margins of Gothic Manuscripts

Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1966.
First Edition. Hardcover.

Includes selective bibliography, key to abbreviated manuscript references, lists of manuscripts according to libraries, guide to use of the index, detailed index of drolerie subjects giving manuscript and folio number from several hundred outstanding Gothic manuscripts, color frontis.

This catalogue of marginal illumination from the early Middle Ages through the first half of the fourteenth century provides an exceptionally detailed record of the ideological and cultural climate of the period. “The droleries amply reflect the Gothic predilection for anecdotal details. Themes from the Scriptures, episodes in the lives of the saints, and motifs from the Bestiary or epic literature appear in close conjunction with subjects drawn from daily life, proverbial lore, and exuberant fantasy: an ape balances on a seesaw, a mermaid plays the vielle; a knight flees from a hare. The commingling of traditional elements with keen factual, often critical, depiction of contemporary institutions and customs fore-shadows tendencies more fully developed in the major art forms of the later Middle Ages.”
