After the death of the Prince Consort on 14 December 1861 Queen Victoria, a widow at the age of forty-two, wished to keep his memory alive by recording his appearance in painting, sculpture and in other ways. One project undertaken with the Privy Council, Arthur Helps, was the publication of extracts from her personal journal relating to her visits with Prince Albert to Scotland. It was first published in a private edition of 73 copies for family and close friends in May of 1865. In January of 1868, this was followed by a popular edition published by Smith, Elder, and Company; its 18,000 copy first run sold out within a week. This edition was in turn followed by a cheap edition published in March 1868 and an illustrated edition published later that year. This facsimile edition follows the text of the illustrated edition and includes color reproductions of the eight paintings from Queen Victoria’s collection (included as engravings in the original edition) and additional colour plates, also chosen from paintings in Queen Victoria’s collection. Two chromolithographs after watercolours by James Roberts also appear here as they do in the original book along with all of the black and white illustrations from the 1968 edition.

Although members of the royal family were made uncomfortable by the personal details revealed in the journal, Victoria believed that its candor and accessibility enhanced her popularity with her subjects.
