Richard Avedon's In the American West was the culmination of a large-scale photographic project commissioned by the musem intended to create a portrait of Americans of the West. Avedon traveled for five years (1979-1984) through 13 states and 189 towns, meeting and photographing men and women he encountered using an 8x10” view camera set on a tripod. All 752 sittings featured average Westerners, people who worked hard in uncelebrated jobs and lead unheralded lives – among them ranch workers, roustabouts, bar girls, drifters, gamblers, and their children. The subjects were photographed against a seamless unromanticized white backdrop and the images presented a stunning and stereotype-shattering view of life in the West. In response to the 1985 exhibit in Fort Worth,  a local reporter commented “this is not our West.” The show was controversial in 1985 and equally so twenty years later when the museum remounted the exhibition in 2005.
