Journey to a War

New York: Random House, 1939.
Hardcover.

Early Edition.

W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood were commissioned by their publishers to visit war-time China and write a book about their experiences. They made their trip in 1938 during the Sino-Japanese War and their itinerary included Hong Kong, Canton, Hankow, Shanghai, the Yellow River war zone, and the Southeastern front in Anhwei Province. They met Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai-shek, Chou En-Lai, the German military advisers, Miss Agnes Smedley, Mr. Peter Fleming, among others along the way. Auden's contribution includes a long poem and a series of sonnets. Isherwood supplies a day-to-day account of four months' travel based upon a diary kept alternately by both authors. The photographs were taken by Auden.
