Volume One of Blyth's four volume work that introduced Japanese haiku to the post-war English speaking world (originally published 1949-1952). In this first volume, Blythe introduces and analyzes the form, discussing Japanese art and religion; the philosophy, technique, and writers of haiku; and its foundation in the tenets of Zen Buddhism. Volumes 2-4 contain collections of haiku arranged by season, including original Japanese and English translation, with explication and comparison to Western works by the author.
Clean of owner's marks, spine faded, shallow creasing to lower corner of outer leaves and wrappers, else very good.
