An interdisciplinary study of the Abakua Society, an Afro-Cuban men’s fraternal order developed in 1836 in urban Cuba by enslaved Africans and creoles, its sacred arts, and its role in modern Cuban cultural history. The author looks closely at altars and adornments associated with the group and traces their sources and evolution over time.
