Everson entered the Dominican Order as Brother Antoninus in 1951 and left it in 1969. The two poems published here “A Savagery of Love” (1952) and its sequel “The Cross Tore A Hole” (1954) together constitute a kind of apotheosis of one man’s immersion in the spiritual life, the baptismal phase.
