The illustrations to this edition originally formed part of a scroll from the Chinese Sung dynasty of the 12th century. The scroll paintings are attributed to Hsiao Chao, whose brushwork and ruled lines demonstrate the meticulous Sun dynasty style. The realistic depictions of people and objects also illustrated Confucian principles. The individual paintings were later cut into leaves to illustrate The Canon of Filial Piety, a major Confucian text with calligraphy by the Sung emperor Kao-tsung (r. 1131-62).
