Signed Limited Edition. Hardcover.

#76 of a Special Limited Edition of 160 copies signed by Fay Godwin and John Fowles. First American Edition.

112 dynamic British landscape photographs printed in duotone and featuring images of moors, trees, ancient stones, etc. In his introduction, Ian Jeffrey describes Godwin’s work as "ceaselessly interested in differences between the wild and the cultivated, between what is primal, vast and even boundless, and what is orderly and near to hand." In his essay, John Fowles, not himself a fan of the photograph with its static image “like a fly in amber,” extols Godwin’s work: “Truly good landscape photographs are a little like objets trouves, natural objects worn and reshaped by time and the elements: that is, objects worn only by the photographer’s age and experience of the right angle, the right light, the right frame, the right mood and moment. Even a totally wild landscape is humanized once it is photographed; but finding that point on the right road, the exact place and the exact time, where the humanizing is almost forgotten, so that the final print seems almost a natural object itself, requires the greatest skill of all, and I believe it is a noble one. Fay has that skill.”
