The Heritage of Edward Weston: An Exhibition; A Tribute

Eugene: University of Oregon Press, 1965.
Paperback.

Presumed First Edition.

Catalogue of an exhibition documenting Weston’s doctrine of “straight photography” and its influence on artist-photographers in the field. Disclaiming the idea that artistic photographs should be distorted to emulate paintings, Weston championed the inherent potentialities of expression that make photography unique from other artistic media. He recognized light as the only legitimate medium for photography and proposed that the photographer’s manipulation of it – in exposure, development, and printing - allows for realization of artistic potentialities peculiar to photography alone. The exhibition included 27 photographs by Weston which covered his range of subject and manipulation of light. The work of nine photographers representing a younger generation adhering to Weston’s principles was included in the exhibition.

A short biography and quote is included for each artist. The quote from Gerald H. Robinson: “Edward Weston's dedication to life glows in even his somber prints. Few people have so successfully merged life and art so that each became indistingishable from the other. His photographs were done with the same vitality, directness and integrity with which he lived; through them I can share, in part, his vision.”
