London: J. M. Dent & Sons LTD, 1988.
Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. Fifth Edition. Hardcover.

With over a thousand reproductions from 362 black and white drawings by Aubrey Beardsley. This fifth edition of Beardsley's Le Morte Darthur is a facsimile of the fourth (1972) edition. With an introduction by Professor John Rhys, a note on Aubrey Beardsley by Aymer Vallance, a revised publisher's note by F. J. Martin Dent, and preface by William Caxton.

Malory's Le Morte Darthur, based on a traditional French epic but with a decidedly British flavour, was first published by William Caxton in 1485 and remains the best-known work of Arthurian legend and literature.  The lives and exploits of King Arthur, Lady Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table are indelibly etched into our collective perception of life in Medieval England. Aubrey Beardsley was commissioned to illustrate the work in 1892 at the age of 20. The 362 full-page drawings and smaller decorations in the Art Nouveau style done for this work stand as his most ambitious and accomplished single work - and represent nearly half of his mature output.
