When Peter Franck was asked to repair a copy of Gessner’s Historiae Animalium, Liber IV printed at Basel in 1558 and bound by Theodoricus Speibruch in 1641, he noted that, although the book had lost its former leather covering and glue, it was unaccountably still sound. Upon examination, he attributed its soundness to Speibruch’s sewing method in putting the sheets together, referred to by Franck in a new term as “arch sewing.” Speilbruch used the architectural principle of building arches in his technique – winding thread around cords two or three times instead of the customary once. The sheets were thus fastened more securely, and the book was more flexible when examined than in others of Franck’s experience. The technique and its virtues are described here.
