Wrapped Reichstag Berlin, a monumental ephemeral art installation conceived by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1971, was mounted in the summer of 1995. The Reichstag, originally constructed in 1884, was draped in nearly 120,000 square yards of polypropylene fabric with an aluminum surface and bound with almost 10 miles of bright blue polypropylene rope. 120 installation workers and 90 professional climbers were directed by Christo and Jeanne Claude in its construction. Over five million visitors viewed the installation during its two week run.
This book follows the historic project from its birth through its completion over 20 years later and is illustrated with sketches, preliminary drawings, documents, and photos that chronicle how the ambitious vision was realized.
