London 1851 was the first international chess tournament. Sixteen of Europe's leading players vied in a series of short knockout matches and the tournament champion was German Adolf Anderssen. Howard Staunton not only conceived, organized and raised the money for the pioneering event, but put together a complete and detailed record of all of the games, many of were annotated in detail. This facsimile reprint of the first 1852 edition also contains the scores of the provincial matches played after the event and an account of the organization and finances of the tournament with supplementary documents. Howard Staunton is the only British player to have been recognized as the world's leading ad master and holds a major place in chess history both through his play and his writing. He is the author of The Chess-Player's Handbook and The Chess Player's Companion.
