The informal commentary by Wallace Stegner published within this volume is based upon and extends from tape-recorded discussions engaged in by him before Dartmouth audiences, with Professors Jay L. Parini and A. B. Paulson and with Visiting Author Ishmael Reed, during Mr. Stegner's period in residence at the College as a Montgomery Fellow in June and July of 1980. Stegner responds sagely to questions from students and colleagues about both teaching and becoming a creative writer.
