Printed for D. Browne at the Black-Swan, without Temple-Bar; J. Shuckburgh, at the Sun, between the two Temple-Gates, Fleet-street; and W. Johnston, at the Golden-Ball, in St. Paul's Church-yard. Unattributed but written by geographer Thomas Salmon (1679-1767). With four folding engravings by I. Kip.

A first volume of a general history to be comprised in Four Volumes, this volume containing a history of all the kingdoms of Asia, Ancient and Modern. This volume includes:

  • I. The Assyrian Monarchy, being the most Ancient
  • II. The Persian Empire.
  • III. The Grecian Empire
  • IV. The History of those Countries possessed by Alexander’s Successors, which comprehended all that Part of the World which lies between the Egean Sea and the River Indus
  • V. The Saracen Empire
  • VI. The Turkish, Indian, and Chinese Empires
  • VII. The History of Scythia and Tartary
  • VIII. The Oriental Islands, particularly Japan, the Philippines, the Spice Islands, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and the rest of the Islands in the Indian Ocean
  • IX. The History of Judea, and the rest of Palestine, which concludes Asia. Thos which the History of Egypt is added.

With four folding engraved plates by I. Kip

5 x 8-1/4, original red morocco over boards with gilt decoration and dentelles rebacked in red leather with gilt decoration and titles, raised bands and black title label, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, iv, 543pp, 11pp index, 4 folding plates, lacking maps.

Contemporary ink owner's name first free endpaper, moderate foxing, plates intact and in excellent condition, a square, tight, generally very good copy of an extremely rare work.
