Percy Metz's lived his early years with his family in Sundance and Sheridan, Wyoming. He earned a law degree from the University of Nebraska at 22 and returned to take charge of his father's law firm branch office in Basin City, the Big Horn County seat. Starting in 1908, he served two terms as Prosecuting Attorney of Big Horn County and Basin and in that capacity handled the Spring Creek Raid case which concerned the last sheep and cattle war. Judge Metz was appointed by then Governor Joseph M. Carey to become the first judge for the Fifth Judicial District with jurisdiction over the entire Big Horn Basin. He served in the Fifth Judicial District of Wyoming until his retirement in 1950. The judge traveled extensively and was an avid hunter, fisherman, photographer with a keen interest in birds and animals. This biography follows the Percy from his arrival at the age of 6 months to the town of Sundance in 1884, through his professional life as a judge, and his personal life as a sportsman and student of nature.
