The fourth and most desirable edition of Falconer's Marine Dictionary, the most comprehensive of the 18th-century marine encyclopedias, originally published in 1769. The fourth edition, published in 1815, was revised and greatly expanded by the naval historian and antiquarian William Burney. Through his Admiralty contacts, Burney provided dimensions, tables and establishments used by the Navy of his day. it has been a prime source for technical details and reflects naval practice at the height of the Napoleonic wars. In addition, the dictionary of French sea terms in this edition sheds light on the world of Britain's main naval adversary.
