In this essay, Franklin first compares two forms of decoration used by William Morris – the typographic decoration in Kelmscott Press books and the literary elaboration of style Morris chose for his prose romances, both of which draw inspiration from romantic and pre-Raphaelite adornments dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. He then examines Morris’ work – both his decently produced books and penny-provincial pamphlets and manifestoes – and how they contributed to the founding of the Kelmscott Press.
