Bled 1931: International Chess Tournament
Yorklyn, DE: Caissa Editions, 1987.
First Edition. Hardcover.
Volume 1 in the Caissa Editions series on the world's greatest chess tournaments.
Hans Kmoch’s original notes on the Bled 1931 tournament were translated from the original German into Russian and first published in Russia in an edition of 500 copies in 1934. This work is a translation of the Russian edition with additional notes and analyses extracted from books about the players and from contemporary chess magazines. The introductory article, “Bled 1931,” by Salo Flohr has been taken from the Soviet chess periodical “64” and provides fascinating insight into the tournament by one of the actual participants. The concluding article, “The Players and their Performances” by Hans Kmoch, appeared in a contemporary magazine and did not appear in the original book. The tournament consisted of 182 games in 26 rounds. The fourteen participants included Alexandre Alekhine Efim Bogoljubov, Aron Nimzowitsch, Isaac Kashdan, Milan Vidmar, Salo Flohr, Gosta Stoltz, Savielly Tartakower, Rudolf Spielmann, Borislav Kostic, Geza Maroczy, Edgar Colle, Lajos Asztalos, and Vasja Pirc. Alekhine, World Chess Champion from 1927 to 1934, won the tournament handily, not losing a single game and finishing with a 5-1/2 point lead over his closest rival Bogoljubow.
