Robert Clunie: Plein-Air Painter of the Sierra

Bishop, California: Coons Gallery, 1998.
Hardcover.

Biography of plein-air landscape painter Robert Clunie (1895-1984) from his early life in Scotland through his arrival in California in 1918 and his full-time concentration on painting in 1927 to his last years. Clunie completed his first Sierra Nevada landscape in the spring of 1928. Clunie spent two months each year for thirty years in his Sierra camp beneath California’s North Palisades Glacier where he recorded the majesty of the wilderness there – snow-capped granite peaks, emerald lakes, high pine forests, colorful storms and sunsets. Clunie and his wife settled in Bishop, California in 1945 where he met and mentored painter Richard Coons. In this work, Coons has written an intimate and well-illustrated biography of Clunie and traced the development and importance of his painting.
