A comprehensive critical assessment of the residential architecture of Hungarian-born architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981). Breuer studied under Walter Gropius at Bauhaus before emigrating to the United States in 1937 to teach at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design through 1946. Breuer's postwar residential designs emphasize informal living, large expanses of glass, and an "additive system of composition" in which individual rooms and spaces are grouped around a main living space. In sequence, the houses reveal the development of Breuer's spatial expertise and adroit use of natural materials such as wood and stone. Based on surviving documents and drawings, and illustrated with archival photographs and plans, Driller analyses 25 projects - houses, villas and apartment buildings - in the United States, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
