Of the deluxe edition 26 are lettered A through Z and 3 are designated as artist’s copies.

The essay originally appeared in Northern Lights. It is based on remarks made at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, April 27, 1995, when Barry Lopez joined Ivan Doig, Gretel Ehrlich, William Kittredge, Page Stegner, and Terry Tempest Williams in an evening of testimony to honor Wallace Stegner.

“I believe what we say in tribute to Stegner is thank you. Thank you for reminding us. Thank you for your faith. Thank you for historical perspective. Thank you for giving us to believe, as you did, that we have a reason to hope because our fate does not lie with one man or one woman, with a few heroes, but with ourselves. And, day to day, one even to another, we are a determined, brave and imaginative people”

It is a beautiful and poignant tribute to the stories that give us hope and meaning and the storytellers, like Wallace Stegner, who provide us perspective and share their faith in us.
