British art historian Rudolf Wittkower (1901-1971) was chairman of the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University when he retired in 1969. These twenty-six essays were presented to Wittkower on his sixty-fifth birthday and deal with subjects in each of the overlapping categories into which most of his published work falls: the migration and interpretation of symbols, problems of proportion and perspective, the iconographic interpretation of art, Italian Renaissance sculpture and architecture, Baroque art in all its manifestations, Palladio and Palladianism, and English architecture.
