Commodore Lawrence Kearny (1789-1868) was an officer in the United States Navy during the early nineteenth century and served faithfully for 54 years. He commanded sloops of war and frigates, served honorably in the War of 1812, battled pirates in the West Indies and Mediterranean, protected American interests in Hawaii, and began trade negotiations with China in the 1840s which ultimately led to the American Open Door Policy a half century later. After retiring from naval service, he served as Mayor of Perth Amboy, New Jersey in 1848-1849.
