Naval Medals 1793 - 1856
London: Privately Printed, 1987.
First Edition. Hardcover.
Printed by Grillford Limited, Granby.
A catalogue of the medals awarded between 1793 and 1856 to officers and ‘men’ of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Indian Marine between the years 1793 and 1856. The whole is divided into groupings of various Wars, Campaigns and Battles inclusive of operations such as the suppression of piracy and the slave trade, for which no medals were ever awarded. The history of the awards for Gallantry, Meritorious and Long Service is told in a separate section, covering the evolutionary history of these awards. The final part of the book is devoted to the detailed research methods used to unearth the stories of the service personnel and medals which appear here.
Most of the listed recipients are accompanied by biographies or guidance on where to find them. If an individual’s time in the service was during a time of some naval, military or social significance, this aspect has been expanded to provide historical examples of life within the Navy during these years.
Most facets of interest to the medal collector – ships, battles, places, exploration, gallantry, careers, ranks, rates and matters numismatic - are featured here. Unexpected additional topics uncovered in research into the careers of the recipients include poaching and smuggling, the theatre, pottery figures, sailors riding horses across country to aid in the building of a bridge across the Danube, or H.M. Ships being used as the seat of government for a deposed foreign monarch.
