One of 469 copies printed for members of the Bibliophile Society, Boston. The title page and text of this edition are from copper plates, engraved by Arthur N. Macdonald for the Bibliophile society. Nine illustrations were designed and etched on copper by W. H. W. Bicknell and each is signed in pencil. Signed by Arthur Macdonald in pencil on the engraved title page. All the plates were destroyed after publication.
A beautifully illustrated edition of Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" (first published in 1751).
Item #9023807-3/4 x 10-3/8", full gilt decorated and titled brown leather, top-edge gilt, deckled fore- and bottom-edges, unpaginated, 9 illustrations from engraved copper plates, engraved title page.
Contemporary bookplate first paste-down, a bit of minor wear to extreme edges of boards and rubbing to leather over boards, tight, square, near fine in two nesting very good slipcases. Internal slipcase has a bit of wear to paper over boards at opening, external slipcase is a bit soiled and title label is darkened with a 3/8" ink mark.
