Precise and undramatic, Adams' accumulative vision of the West now stands as a formidable document, reflecting broader, global concerns about the environment, while consistently recognizing signs of human aspiration and elements of hope across a particular changing landscape.
The photographs collected here were taken in eastern Oregon between 1999 and 2003. Much of the terrain here is unforested - grasslands, sagebrush, barren playas. "At the edges of these sunny vacancies, however there are trees that no landscape photographer would pass by. Because, as Wendell Berry wrote in one of his Sabbath poems, 'A tree forms itself in answer / to its place and to the light'."
