Los Angeles Spring
New York: Aperture / A New Images Book, 1986.
First Edition. Hardcover.
A collection of Robert Adams's black and white photographs of Los Angeles.
"Los Angeles Spring is an elegy for an ideal botanic world that has all but disappeared from the Los Angeles basin. The book is less an expression of grief, however, than the search for a way to understand and accept our landscape as a whole. Robert Adams is among the few photographers who have resisted the impulse to dismiss scenes in smog, finding in them instead a subject as complex as modern life itself. There is in some of the pictures an undercurrent of apprehension appropriate to tragedy, but most of the views are finally positive - rich with unexpected tonalities and classically structured so that they emphasize the wholeness and thereby the significance of places."
