1854 combined edition of the definitive work on The North American Sylva – 6 volumes including French botanist Francois Andrew Michaux’s 3-volume compendium of trees north of Mexico and east of the Rockies first published in French in 1810 and American botanist and ornithologist Thomas Nuttall’s continuation, first published in 1841, including eastern trees overlooked in Michaux’s work and species gathered in Nuttall’s later excursions in the Midwest and western United States.
This early edition includes 277 hand-colored plates - 155 hand-colored copperplate engravings after the Redoute brothers and Pancrace Bessa (Michaux Volumes I-III) and 121 hand-colored lithographs by Adolph Biegeman (Nuttall Volumes 1-III). All colored plates are present. Editions after 1865 no longer included hand-colored plates. Michaux’s work was translated from the French with notes by J. Jay Smith.
Item #9024056-3/4 x 11”, three-quarter green leather, raised bands, gilt titles, green cloth over boards with gilt decoration front panel of each volume, marbled endpapers, 277 hand-colored plates. All colored plates are present, two plates in Volume I of the Nuttall work have been misnumbered.
Volumes 1-3 – 156 hand-colored colored copperplate engravings with tissue guards by Pierre and Henri Redoute and Pancrace Bessa.
Volumes 4-6 – 121 fine colored lithographs with tissue guards hand-colored by A. Biegeman.
Edge-wear to leather, first free marbled endpaper Volume III of the Michaux volume excised and front board of same volume cracked at joint, ink-stamped owner’s name verso of front marbled endpapers in remaining volumes, general foxing to text pages, a bit of toning to illustrations and their tissue guards, but illustrations are generally bright and beautiful, good to very good overall.
