Published to accompany an exhibition at the Robert Miller Gallery in 1994 of oil paintings by abstract expressionist artist Joan Mitchell (1926-1992).
Joan Mitchell called the twenty oils that are reproduced here her "black paintings," although there is no black in any of them - only a darkness not characteristic of the artist's other work. The somber paintings of 1964 were produced the year after Mitchell's father's death and her mother's long battle with cancer.
