A travelogue of a six-week journey made by Rebecca West and her husband to Yugoslavia in 1937. The work is famously packed with cultural and historical detail. Among her locales visited: Croatia, Dalmatia, Herzegovina, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia, Old Serbia, and Montenegro.
Publication of the work coincided with the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941 and West added a foreword praising the brave resistors with a new dedication: "To my friends in Yugoslavia who are all now dead or enslaved."

Toning and offsetting to endpapers, rubbing to spine title of Volume II, clean of owner's marks, tight, square, crisp corners, top-edge stain very bright, very good+ in spine-toned dust wrappers with bright front panels and a bit of general moderate wear to edges, including two small chips to dust wrapper of Volume I and a 2-1/4 x 2-1/2" chip to rear panel of Volume II. Dust wrappers are in protective mylar and housed a very good slipcase with wear to tips and cracks at one joint and down the side opposite the opening.
