The type face is Janson, and the paper is all-rag Oxbow; it has been designed and printed by The L-D Allen Press, with decorations by Mallette Dean. The hundred pages are printed in three colors from Janson type printed on a Colts Armory press, the paper is Oxbow all-rag, and it is bound by William Wheeler in calico print cloth boards with fore green linen spine.
Dated journal entries, dairies, correspondence and other miscellany. For type page unity all items were enclosed within full-page rules, printed in mustard color, with headings and folios in green. Oxbow decorations were engraved in wood by Mallette Dean. with one full-page photographic illustration of the "Donner Party Doll" which was a cherished possession of the youngster Patty Reed as she crossed plans and mountains towards California. Her doll survived the ordeal.
This edition was the first of only three Allen Press titles which was not set by hand since the Janson type was most suited to the text. The binding material, a calico cloth with green linen spine was chosen to give the books a flavor of California pioneers.
