The C. F. Orvis Company Writing Contest was established in 1981 to promote excellence in writing that deals with fly fishing, bird hunting, and the conservation of bird and game species. This anthology is a distillation of the best writing about hunting and fishing from the years 1981 and 1982. Contest judges were Nick Lyons, Paul Schullery, Perk Perkins, John Merwin, and Tom Rosenbauer.
