Mark Twain: San Francisco Correspondent; Selections From His Letters To The Territorial Enterprise 1865-1866
Kentfield / San Francisco: The Allen Press / The Book Club of California, 1957.
Limited Edition. Hardcover.
Allen Press Book #20. Limited edition of 400 copies. Printed at The Allen Press for the Book Club of California.
Display types are Goudy Modern, printed in red throughout. On the title-page and section openings - between the display caps - is printed in a subtle beige ink with Victorian types, VIRGINIA CITY TERRITORIAL ENTERPRISE.
This edition, The Allens’ sixth for The Book Club of California, was selected by the Club; the types were machine set; the paper was machine-made, and the printing done on a motor-driven press dictated by the requirement for 400 copies and prompt delivery.
Noteworthy features of this edition are Twain's sharply barbed humor, the editors' notes, and a new two-color pressmark engraved by Mallette Dean.
These newspaper dispatches were written by Mark Twain from San Francisco to the Virginia City (Nevada) Territorial Enterprise during the winter of 1965-66. The text is transcribed from scrapbook clippings kept by Mark Twin's brother Orion, now in the Morse Collection of the Yale University Library. The selections in this volume have been chosen primarily for the sake of the light they throw on early San Francisco.
