Eight chess grandmasters participated in the Candidates Tournament for the World Championship held in 1959 in Yugoslavia. Mikhail Tal, then 22 years old, won the tournament and earned the right to contend for the world championship the following year. Tal subsequently beat World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik in the spring of 1960. Bobby Fischer, at 16, was one of the candidates (still the youngest player ever to participate in a Candidates Tournament).
