First Edition. Hardcover.
Two Volume Set from the Urban Domestic Architecture Series. Research by Rebecca Gale. Research Consultant Jim Lewis. The two volumes include over 800 archival color and duotone photographs and house and landscape plans.
The first volume explores homes built between 1885 and 1919 in the iconic residential, single-family neighborhoods of Los Angeles from Pasadena to Malibu. Homes featured were owned by innovators and business leaders and designed by architectural greats like Greene & Greene and Richard Neutra. By 1920, the population of Los Angeles had more than doubled and new developments in Bel-Air, Beverly Hills, and Holmby Hills offered buyers ocean views only 20 minutes from downtown L.A. The second volume explores homes built between 1920 and 1935 for celebrities like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Marion Davies and publisher William Randolph Hearst, and designed by innovative architects like Gordon B. Kaufmann, Wallace Neff, Roland E. Coate, Frank Lloyd Wright, Rudolph Schindler, and Richard Neutra.
