Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting

Palm Springs, California: Palm Springs Art Museum, 2009.
First Edition. Hardcover.

Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Palm Springs Art Museum and the San Jose Museum of Art, 2009-2010. The exhibition is based on an earlier retrospective entitled Thiebaud: Seventy Years of Painting organized by Professor Gene Cooper for the Laguna Art Museum in 2007.

The work of Wayne Thiebaud (1920-2021) embraces diverse subjects and stylistic variations and is characterized by a blend of realism and abstraction using heavy pigment and exaggerated colors. Best known for his still life compositions of bakery goods and delicatessen counters with their distinctive brand of nostalgic Americana, Thiebaud also produced large-scale portraits, Northern California landscapes, San Francisco cityscapes, and, in his later work, coastal scenes. His seminal works are presented here.
